Same-day registration and voting

Same-day registration allows a voter to register for the first time or update their existing registration on the same day they vote. After registering, the newly registered voter can immediately vote at that same site.

Eligibility Requirements

To register using same-day registration, an individual must meet all eligibility requirements. For more information on eligibility, click HERE.

Proof of Residence

To same-day register, you will need to provide proof of residence in addition to your photo ID. Proof of residence includes any of the following documents that includes the voter’s current address:

  • North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Photo identification issued by a government agency, provided that the card includes the voter’s current name and address.
  • A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document showing the voter’s name and address.
  • For students living on campus, a document from an educational institution with the student’s name and on-campus housing address. Or, an educational institution may provide the county board of elections a list of students residing in particular campus housing, which will suffice if a student living in campus housing shows a valid student photo identification card.

IMPORTANT:  You must live in the county where you are registering and have resided there for at least 30 days prior to Election Day

Step 1: Request your ballot ASAP HERE

  • You must first be registered to vote

Step 2: Fill out your ballot

Your ballot contains two envelopes: (1) A secrecy envelope and (2) A return envelope  

  • Step 1: Vote by completely filling in the circles on the ballot using either blue or black ink
  • Step 2: Once filled out, put your filled-out ballot into the secrecy envelope and seal
  • Step 3: Put your secrecy envelope into your return envelope
  • Step 4: Read and sign the oath
  • Step 5: Your ballot is ready to send

What type of ID DO i NEED?

Acceptable IDs for In-Person and Mail-in Voting

Any of the following that is unexpired, or expired for one year or less:

  • North Carolina Driver’s License
  • State ID from the NCDMV (also called “non-operator ID”)
  • Driver’s license or non-driver ID from another state, District of Columbia, or U.S. territory (only if registered in North Carolina within 90 days of the election)
  • U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport card
  • North Carolina voter photo ID card issued by a county board of elections
  • College or university student ID approved by the State Board of Elections
  • State or local government or charter school employee ID approved by the State Board of Elections

Note: A voter 65 or older may use an expired form of acceptable ID if the ID was unexpired on their 65th birthday

Any of the following, regardless of whether the ID contains an expiration or issuance date:

  • Military or veteran ID card (with photo) issued by the U.S. government
  • Tribal enrollment card (with photo)issued by a tribe recognized by the state, or a tribe recognized by the federal government
  • ID card (with photo) issued by an agency of the U.S. government or the State of North Carolina for a public assistance program (Note: Although this is an acceptable form of ID under North Carolina law, the State Board is not aware of any such ID in circulation that contains a photo. All IDs for voting are required to have a photo.)

All County Boards of Elections can issue free voter photo IDs to registered voters in their county. To get a free voter photo ID, find additional information HERE.

ID Exceptions

In North Carolina, if any voter is unable to show photo ID when voting in-person or by mail, they may fill out an ID Exception Form and vote their ballot. For more information on permitted exceptions, click HERE.  

No ID? Provisional Voting
  • A provisional ballot is a special kind of ballot given to voters who can't provide the necessary documents required by federal law in North Carolina to vote at the polls.
